The Children's Hospital Department of Pediatric Dentistry serves over 20,000 infants, children and adolescents each year. Recognized as experts in pediatric dentistry, the dental staff focuses on providing an all-inclusive continuum of care while treating healthy and medically compromised children. Dental care can be part of a child's daily routine with regular checkups at the dentist, but it can also be a more serious concern. Children's dentists provide comprehensive oral healthcare evaluations and referrals for complex dental and craniofacial conditions. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry also includes facilities for general anesthesia associated with the provision of dental treatment for selected cases. The department performs nearly 2,200 operative procedures a year, often in conjunction with other surgical services in order to better coordinate care and minimize costs to families. Services they Provide:      Infant oral health exams Oral health consultations Preventive treatment such as sealants, fluoride varnish applications and oral hygiene instructions Comprehensive oral health care for children with: Early childhood caries (cavities) Caries and periodontal disease Special Health Care Needs Significant underlying medical disorders Oro-facial traumatic injuries Phase one (early) orthodontics to address dental growth and development problems Sedation for mildly anxious and fearful children Comprehensive oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia Limited oral and maxillofacial surgery Contemporary restorative care options Oral protection for sports (fabrication of mouth guards) Tooth bleaching Treatment of patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial anomalies Treatment for oral habits that negatively affect proper growth of teeth Consultation with other medical specialties A Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program that trains pediatric dentists of the future
